It was love at first sight. I had spent many procrastinating hours browsing the one-of-a-kind Expedition Portal for the right truck for my trip. There are many options for sure, but not many that are workable if one has a limited budget. Of course I would love to join the global Landy movement or rely on a trusted G class Mercedes, but those were out of reach. An easy-to-fix Toyota then, I decided, one that’s broken in without having suffered abuse. In early September 2014 I spotted her: a grey 1991 Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser with just over 130,000 miles. She had already had a 3″ lift, an ARB bull bar, a winch and a snorkel. I flew to Jacksonville, FL to pick her up and drove her all the way back to D.C. without any issues. Relief! Paso a paso, paisa Rudy, a genius of a car mechanic working for Iron Mike’s Garage in Rockville, MD changed her main seal and a few other parts, installed additional Hella lights and some security gimmicks (which shall remain secret…) and made sure that she’s in good shape. Meanwhile, I built a platform to sleep on which also maximizes storage space. Is she fast? No. But is she strong? Absolutely. And is she thirsty? Heck, yeah! She’s my bestia blanda.
